Prayer for Family Protection
Place a hedge of protection around every member of your household.
From the Church’s tradition: The Christian family is "the domestic church" — and praying over it is the oldest duty of Christian parents, from the blessing of children in Scripture to the household prayers of the early Church.
Nothing exposes the heart like having a family — because nothing else of yours walks around outside your protection all day. Scripture’s answer to that fear is not to pretend the dangers are unreal; it is to bring the household, member by member, under the protection of God who "shall give his angels charge over thee."
The first prayer below covers the whole household — spouse, children, home — asking God to place a hedge of protection around each one. The second is a parent’s prayer specifically over children: their bodies, their minds, their friendships, what reaches them through their screens, and their souls. Pray them by name; the naming matters.

Praying over a family
The "hedge of protection" the first prayer asks for comes from the Book of Job, where even the accuser admits he cannot touch what God has hedged: "Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about?" (Job 1:10). A family prayer claims that fence — not as a guarantee that nothing hard will ever happen, but as the settled placement of the household inside God’s governance rather than outside it.
Pray for the members one at a time, by name, and pray for the bonds as well as the people: the marriage, the relationships between siblings, the peace of the home itself. The tradition is blunt that division is the enemy’s preferred entry into a family — which is why family protection prayers always include forgiveness within the family, not only defense from outside it.
Then make it a rhythm. A family that is prayed over once during a crisis has been defended once; a family prayed over nightly lives in different territory. The night prayers and the home blessing on this site are built to be that rhythm.
When to pray it
- ✦Nightly, over the household — by name.
- ✦When a family member walks out the door into something hard: exams, deployments, surgery, a difficult season.
- ✦During family conflict — beginning with forgiveness inside the walls.
- ✦For family members far from the faith — persistent, named, patient intercession.

Questions about Family Protection
How do I pray a hedge of protection around my family?+
Name each member of the household and ask God specifically to surround them — body, mind, and soul — with His protection, in the pattern of Job 1:10. The family protection prayer on this page walks the full household: spouse, children, home, and the bonds between them.
Can I pray protection over family members who don’t believe?+
Yes — and you should. Intercession does not require the consent of the person being prayed for; St. Monica prayed seventeen years for Augustine. Pray protection over them and conversion for them, and be prepared for the second prayer to take longer.
What is the best prayer for my children’s protection?+
The combination the tradition keeps returning to: the Guardian Angel prayer (each child has one — Matthew 18:10), a parent’s named blessing at bedtime, and Psalm 91 over the household. The dedicated prayer over children on this page gathers a parent’s specific fears — including the digital ones — into one prayer.
Our family is going through real spiritual trouble. What should we do?+
Pray these prayers as a household, return together to confession and the Eucharist, bless the home — and talk to your parish priest about what is happening. Persistent trouble that frightens the family is exactly what the Church’s priests exist to handle; bringing one in early is wisdom, not overreaction.
