Prayer for Family Protection

Place a hedge of protection around every member of your household.

From the Church’s tradition: The Christian family is "the domestic church" — and praying over it is the oldest duty of Christian parents, from the blessing of children in Scripture to the household prayers of the early Church.

Nothing exposes the heart like having a family — because nothing else of yours walks around outside your protection all day. Scripture’s answer to that fear is not to pretend the dangers are unreal; it is to bring the household, member by member, under the protection of God who "shall give his angels charge over thee."

The first prayer below covers the whole household — spouse, children, home — asking God to place a hedge of protection around each one. The second is a parent’s prayer specifically over children: their bodies, their minds, their friendships, what reaches them through their screens, and their souls. Pray them by name; the naming matters.

Family Protection Prayer — Full Text

A covering prayer for the whole household — pray each member by name.

Heavenly Father, I bring my family before Your throne of grace. I ask You to place a hedge of protection around each member of my household. Lord Jesus, cover my family with Your Precious Blood. Place Your Cross between us and every evil spirit, every curse, every hex, and every work of darkness directed at us. I pray for my spouse: Lord, protect their mind, body, and soul. Guard their heart from temptation. Strengthen our marriage bond. I pray for my children: Lord, shield them from every predator — physical, spiritual, and digital. Guard their innocence. Protect their minds from the lies of the enemy. Surround them with Your holy angels. I pray for our home: Lord, let this house be a sanctuary of Your presence. Drive out every spirit of division, anger, fear, and chaos. Fill our home with Your peace, Your joy, and Your love. Saint Michael, defend our family. Guardian Angels of each family member, be vigilant in your protection. Holy Family of Nazareth — Jesus, Mary, and Joseph — pray for us. Lord, I consecrate my family to Your Sacred Heart. We are Yours. We trust in You. No weapon formed against us shall prosper. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Protection Over My Children

A parent’s prayer — "Let the little children come to me" (Mark 10:14).

Lord Jesus, You who said "Let the little children come to me" — I bring my children to You right now. Not just to bless them, but to place them under Your mighty protection. "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." — Mark 10:14 Lord, the world my children are growing up in frightens me. The threats are real — physical, digital, spiritual. I cannot be everywhere. I cannot see everything. I cannot protect them from every danger. But You can. And I trust You to do what I cannot. PROTECT THEIR INNOCENCE: Lord, in a world that seeks to corrupt children at younger and younger ages, be their shield. Guard what enters their eyes and ears. Protect them from predators — both those who lurk in person and those who lurk online. Place Your holy angels around them as sentinels. PROTECT THEIR FAITH: The enemy targets children because he knows their faith is powerful. Protect the seeds of belief You have planted in their hearts. Let no cynicism, no mockery, and no worldly philosophy uproot what You have sown. PROTECT THEIR FRIENDSHIPS: Lord, surround them with friends who will build them up, not tear them down. Expose any friendship that leads them away from You. Give them the courage to stand alone when standing with the crowd means standing against You. PROTECT THEIR FUTURE: I entrust their future to You completely. Their education, their careers, their marriages, their calling — all of it belongs to You. Guide them with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day. Lord, I refuse to parent from a place of fear. I parent from a place of faith — faith that the God who parted the Red Sea can protect my children from anything this world throws at them. Guardian Angels of my children, I call upon you. Be vigilant. Be fierce. Never leave their side. In Jesus' holy name. Amen.

Praying over a family

The "hedge of protection" the first prayer asks for comes from the Book of Job, where even the accuser admits he cannot touch what God has hedged: "Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about?" (Job 1:10). A family prayer claims that fence — not as a guarantee that nothing hard will ever happen, but as the settled placement of the household inside God’s governance rather than outside it.

Pray for the members one at a time, by name, and pray for the bonds as well as the people: the marriage, the relationships between siblings, the peace of the home itself. The tradition is blunt that division is the enemy’s preferred entry into a family — which is why family protection prayers always include forgiveness within the family, not only defense from outside it.

Then make it a rhythm. A family that is prayed over once during a crisis has been defended once; a family prayed over nightly lives in different territory. The night prayers and the home blessing on this site are built to be that rhythm.

When to pray it

  • Nightly, over the household — by name.
  • When a family member walks out the door into something hard: exams, deployments, surgery, a difficult season.
  • During family conflict — beginning with forgiveness inside the walls.
  • For family members far from the faith — persistent, named, patient intercession.

Questions about Family Protection

How do I pray a hedge of protection around my family?+

Name each member of the household and ask God specifically to surround them — body, mind, and soul — with His protection, in the pattern of Job 1:10. The family protection prayer on this page walks the full household: spouse, children, home, and the bonds between them.

Can I pray protection over family members who don’t believe?+

Yes — and you should. Intercession does not require the consent of the person being prayed for; St. Monica prayed seventeen years for Augustine. Pray protection over them and conversion for them, and be prepared for the second prayer to take longer.

What is the best prayer for my children’s protection?+

The combination the tradition keeps returning to: the Guardian Angel prayer (each child has one — Matthew 18:10), a parent’s named blessing at bedtime, and Psalm 91 over the household. The dedicated prayer over children on this page gathers a parent’s specific fears — including the digital ones — into one prayer.

Our family is going through real spiritual trouble. What should we do?+

Pray these prayers as a household, return together to confession and the Eucharist, bless the home — and talk to your parish priest about what is happening. Persistent trouble that frightens the family is exactly what the Church’s priests exist to handle; bringing one in early is wisdom, not overreaction.
