When the Night Feels Unsafe
If you're reading this at 2am because you can't sleep, because the nightmares won't stop, because something feels wrong in your bedroom — you're not alone. Thousands of Christians experience spiritual disturbance during sleep, and most suffer in silence because they don't know who to talk to about it.
Maybe you've tried warm milk, melatonin, white noise machines, and meditation apps. Maybe your doctor says everything is fine. But you know — deep in your spirit — that what's happening at night isn't just stress or bad dreams. It feels darker than that. More personal. More targeted.
You're not imagining it. And you're not crazy.
Father Michael, a Catholic priest with extensive experience in deliverance ministry, has worked with hundreds of people who describe exactly what you're experiencing. The good news is this: God's protection is available to you right now, tonight, before you close your eyes. The prayers on this page have been prayed by thousands of people who once feared the night — and found peace.
Why Sleep Is Spiritually Vulnerable
Scripture makes it clear that nighttime carries unique spiritual significance. The Psalmist writes: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety" (Psalm 4:8). The very fact that this verse exists tells us something important — peaceful sleep is a gift from God, and it requires His protection.
Psalm 91:5-6 is even more explicit: "You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday." Notice the specific mention of terrors and pestilence that operate in darkness. The Bible acknowledges that nighttime is when certain spiritual forces are most active.
There are several reasons why the enemy targets us during sleep:
- Our conscious defenses are down. During the day, we can actively resist temptation, pray, and make choices that align with God's will. During sleep, our will is passive. We cannot choose to resist.
- We are isolated. Most spiritual attacks during sleep happen when we are alone — or when everyone around us is also asleep. There are no prayer partners awake to intercede.
- Our subconscious is exposed. Dreams access memories, fears, and wounds that we keep buried during waking hours. The enemy knows our weak points and exploits them through dreams.
- We are physically vulnerable. Sleep paralysis, night terrors, and disturbed sleep patterns leave us exhausted and fearful — which is exactly the state the enemy wants us in.
This is why Father Michael teaches in Chapter 4 of the Spiritual Protection Course that an evening prayer routine is not optional for Christians who take spiritual warfare seriously. Just as a soldier would never sleep in enemy territory without posting a guard, we should never sleep without placing ourselves under God's protection.
The Night Protection Prayer
This is the prayer Father Michael recommends as the foundation of your bedtime routine. It covers the essential elements of nighttime protection: the Blood of Jesus, the Cross, angelic protection, forgiveness, and the filling of the Holy Spirit.
Lord Jesus Christ, as I prepare to rest this night, I ask You to cover me and my household with Your Precious Blood.
I place the Cross of Jesus Christ between me and every evil spirit, every nightmare, every disturbance, and every attack of the enemy.
I ask You, Lord, to post Your holy angels around my bed and around the walls of my home. Let no evil enter here. Let no demon disturb my sleep. Let no spirit of fear, anxiety, or terror come near me.
I forgive anyone who has wronged me today. I release all anger, bitterness, and resentment into Your hands. I ask forgiveness for my own sins, failings, and shortcomings.
Holy Spirit, fill this room with Your peace. Let Your presence be so strong that no darkness can remain.
Blessed Mother Mary, wrap me in your mantle of protection. Saint Michael, stand guard over me as I sleep. Guardian Angel, watch over me through the night.
Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Watch over my family. Protect my children. Guard our home.
Grant me peaceful, restful sleep. Restore my body, mind, and spirit. Prepare me for the work You have for me tomorrow.
Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

Pray this prayer slowly. Mean every word. If you feel resistance — a tightness in your chest, a wandering mind, a sudden urge to skip it — that is actually a sign that the prayer is working. The enemy does not want you to pray this. Push through.
Understanding Sleep Paralysis from a Spiritual Perspective
Few experiences are as terrifying as sleep paralysis. You wake up, fully conscious, and you cannot move. Your body is frozen. You feel a weight on your chest. And then you see it — a dark figure standing in the corner of the room, or sitting on the edge of your bed, or hovering above you.
Modern medicine explains sleep paralysis as a disruption in the transition between sleep and wakefulness. During REM sleep, your brain paralyzes your muscles to prevent you from acting out your dreams. Sometimes you wake up before the paralysis wears off. The hallucinations are attributed to a kind of waking dream state — your brain is still partially in REM while your consciousness is returning.
This is a real and valid medical explanation. But it doesn't account for everything.
Here is what the medical explanation does not address: Why do people across every culture, every continent, and every century report seeing the same entity? The "shadow figure" — a dark, humanoid presence that radiates malice — appears in the accounts of ancient Mesopotamians, medieval Europeans, modern Americans, and isolated tribal peoples who have never had contact with each other. Researchers call this "culturally consistent hallucination," but that phrase raises more questions than it answers.
The Bible offers an account that may illuminate this phenomenon. In Genesis 32:24-30, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious being through the night — a struggle that is both physical and spiritual, leaving him with a permanent limp. Jacob was attacked in his sleep, alone, at night. The parallels to sleep paralysis are striking.
Father Michael's perspective, informed by years of deliverance ministry, is this: the medical mechanism may be real, but the entity exploiting it is also real. Just as a burglar uses an unlocked window — the window is real, the burglar is also real. Sleep paralysis may be a neurological event that creates a moment of extraordinary vulnerability, which demonic forces can exploit.
What should you do if you experience sleep paralysis?
- Call on the name of Jesus. Even if you cannot speak, say it in your mind. Countless people report that paralysis episodes end the moment they invoke His name. This is consistent with Philippians 2:10 — "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow."
- Do not engage with the entity. Do not try to communicate with it, understand it, or negotiate with it. Command it to leave in Jesus' name.
- Pray the Night Protection Prayer before bed every single night. Prevention is far better than intervention. Most people who establish a consistent prayer routine before bed see a dramatic reduction or complete cessation of sleep paralysis episodes.
- Address any open doors. Sleep paralysis that occurs repeatedly may indicate that the enemy has a specific access point. The Spiritual Protection Course teaches you how to identify and close these doors in Chapters 2 and 3.
- See a doctor as well. Rule out medical causes. Spiritual warfare and medical care are not mutually exclusive — God works through both.
Psalm 91: The Ultimate Sleep Protection
Psalm 91 is known among exorcists and deliverance ministers as the most powerful prayer of protection in all of Scripture. It is the psalm Jesus Himself quoted when the devil tempted Him in the wilderness. Praying it before bed is one of the most effective things you can do for your spiritual safety at night.
Read it slowly. Let each verse sink in. This is not a magic formula — it is a declaration of trust in the Living God.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.If you make the Most High your dwelling —
even the LORD, who is my refuge —
then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent."Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation."— Psalm 91 (NIV)
Notice the bolded verses. Psalm 91 specifically addresses the "terror of night" and the "pestilence that stalks in the darkness." This psalm was written for exactly the situation you may be facing right now. Visit our full Psalm 91 prayer page to bookmark it for nightly use.
Prayer Against Nightmares
If nightmares have been a persistent problem, this prayer targets the issue directly. It addresses not just the symptoms (the nightmares themselves) but the root causes — the open doors that may be giving the enemy access to your dream life.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, I come before You with a troubled heart. I have been plagued by nightmares and disturbing dreams, and I ask for Your deliverance and protection.
In Your holy name, I command every evil spirit that is causing or influencing my dreams to depart from me now. You have no authority over my sleep. I belong to Jesus Christ, and He is Lord over my conscious and unconscious mind.
I renounce every open door that may have allowed the enemy access to my dreams:
- Any media I have consumed that opened a door to darkness
- Any unconfessed sin that gives the enemy a legal right
- Any unforgiveness in my heart
- Any fear that I have entertained
Lord, I ask You to:
- Heal my imagination and cleanse my memory
- Remove every image the enemy has planted in my mind
- Replace every nightmare with visions of Your peace and love
- Station Your angels around my bed to guard my sleep
- Fill my subconscious with Your truth and Your Word
I pray Psalm 4:8 over my sleep: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
Holy Spirit, take control of my dream life. Let me dream dreams from You — dreams of hope, of comfort, and of Your plans for my future.
Precious Blood of Jesus, cover my mind as I sleep. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You. Amen.
This prayer is also available on its own dedicated page at Prayer Against Nightmares. We recommend praying it in combination with the Night Protection Prayer for maximum coverage.

How to Create a Spiritually Protected Bedroom
Prayer is the foundation of spiritual protection, but God also gives us practical tools and sacramentals to reinforce that protection physically. Here are concrete steps you can take to make your bedroom a spiritually safe space:
1. Place a Crucifix Above Your Bed
Not just a cross — a crucifix, with the image of Christ on it. The crucifix is a powerful reminder and spiritual weapon. It represents Christ's victory over sin, death, and evil. Many exorcists report that demonic entities cannot bear to look at a crucifix. Place one above your bed or on the wall where you can see it as you fall asleep. Have it blessed by a priest.
2. Use Holy Water
Before bed each night, sprinkle holy water in the four corners of your room, on your bed, and on your doorway and windows. Make the sign of the cross with holy water on your own forehead. This is one of the simplest and most effective sacramentals available. You can obtain holy water from any Catholic church.
3. Remove Spiritually Problematic Items
This is the step most people skip — and it's often the most important. Objects associated with the occult, other religions' spiritual practices, or darkness can serve as access points for the enemy. This includes:
- Ouija boards, tarot cards, or any divination tools (even "for fun")
- Books about witchcraft, the occult, or new age spirituality
- Objects from non-Christian spiritual rituals or shrines
- Horror media that glorifies demonic activity
- Gifts from people involved in the occult
If you're unsure about a specific item, Chapter 6 of the Spiritual Protection Course covers the Home Cleansing Protocol in detail, including how to discern which items may be problematic and how to properly dispose of them.
4. Establish a Nightly Prayer Routine
Consistency matters. The enemy looks for gaps in your defense. Praying the Night Protection Prayer sporadically is good; praying it every single night without fail is far more effective. Set a reminder on your phone. Make it as automatic as brushing your teeth. Over time, you will build a spiritual atmosphere in your bedroom that darkness cannot penetrate.
5. Keep Scripture in Your Room
An open Bible on your nightstand — particularly open to Psalm 91 — serves as both a spiritual anchor and a practical resource. When you wake from a nightmare, you can immediately read God's Word and reground yourself in His truth. The Word of God is described in Ephesians 6:17 as "the sword of the Spirit" — keep your sword within arm's reach.
6. Invoke Your Guardian Angel
God has assigned a specific angel to protect you. The Guardian Angel Prayer is a simple but powerful way to activate that protection before sleep. Your guardian angel doesn't need your prayer to do their job — but your prayer is an act of cooperation with God's plan that strengthens the angelic protection around you.
The Evening Shield Routine
Father Michael teaches a specific multi-step evening routine in Chapter 4 of the Spiritual Protection Course called the Evening Shield Routine. Here are the first two steps — free for you to begin using tonight:
Step 1: The Examination and Release (5 minutes)
Before you pray any protection prayer, you need to close any doors the enemy may have gained during the day. Sit quietly and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any moments from the day where you sinned, harbored unforgiveness, consumed spiritually harmful content, or acted out of fear rather than faith. For each one, name it specifically: "Lord, I repent of [specific action]. I renounce it and close this door in Jesus' name." This step is crucial because unconfessed sin gives the enemy legal ground to operate.
Step 2: The Blood Covering (3 minutes)
Pray the Night Protection Prayer (above), or a similar prayer that specifically invokes the Precious Blood of Jesus over yourself, your family, your home, and your sleep. The Blood of Jesus is the most powerful spiritual covering in existence — it is what defeated Satan at Calvary, and it is what defeats him in your bedroom tonight.
The complete Evening Shield Routine includes five steps and takes about 15 minutes. Steps 3 through 5 involve specific angelic invocations, room-by-room blessing protocols, and a closing seal prayer that Father Michael has developed through decades of ministry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have nightmares every night?
Recurring nightmares can have both natural and spiritual causes. Stress, trauma, medication, and sleep disorders are common medical explanations. However, from a spiritual warfare perspective, persistent nightmares — especially those involving dark figures, paralysis, or a feeling of evil presence — can indicate spiritual attack. The enemy often targets our sleep because our conscious defenses are down. If nightmares persist despite good sleep hygiene, consider whether there are unresolved spiritual issues: unconfessed sin, unforgiveness, occult involvement (even casual), or objects in your home that may have spiritual attachments. Praying the Night Protection Prayer before bed, keeping a crucifix in your room, and using holy water are practical first steps. If nightmares continue, speak with a priest about a house blessing.
Is sleep paralysis a demonic attack?
Sleep paralysis has a well-documented medical explanation: it occurs when your brain wakes up before your body does, leaving you temporarily unable to move. This is a real neurological phenomenon. However, many Christians who experience sleep paralysis report seeing shadow figures, feeling a malevolent presence, or sensing pressure on their chest — experiences that go beyond the medical explanation. Father Michael teaches that while the physical mechanism may be neurological, the enemy can exploit this vulnerable state to terrorize you. The shadow figures people report are remarkably consistent across cultures and centuries. Whether the cause is medical, spiritual, or both, the solution is the same: call on the name of Jesus. Many people report that sleep paralysis episodes end immediately when they invoke His name, even mentally. This is consistent with James 4:7 — "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Can I pray for protection over my children's sleep?
Absolutely. Parents have spiritual authority over their children, and praying for their protection is both your right and your responsibility. You can pray the Night Protection Prayer over your children before they go to bed, substituting "my child" or their name where appropriate. You can also bless their room with holy water, place a crucifix above their bed, and teach them age-appropriate prayers like the Guardian Angel Prayer. Many parents report that their children's nightmares stopped after they began consistently praying over their bedrooms. If your child is experiencing persistent night terrors, consider having a priest bless their room specifically.
What if the nightmares come back after praying?
Spiritual warfare is often a process, not a one-time event. If nightmares return after prayer, do not be discouraged — this does not mean your prayers failed. It may mean: (1) There is an open door you have not yet identified or closed. Common open doors include unforgiveness, habitual sin, occult objects in the home, or media consumption that invites darkness. (2) The enemy is testing your resolve. Demons will often increase attacks temporarily when they feel their hold weakening. Persist in prayer. (3) You may need additional spiritual support. Chapter 7 of the Spiritual Protection Course covers the Emergency Action Plan for situations where attacks persist despite prayer. Consider also speaking with a priest about the Sacrament of Confession and potentially a deliverance prayer session.
Should I use holy water before bed?
Yes. Holy water is one of the most powerful sacramentals available to Catholics, and using it before bed is a practice recommended by many exorcists, including Father Michael. You can sprinkle holy water on your bed, around your room, on doorways and windows, and make the sign of the cross on your forehead with it. Holy water that has been blessed by a priest carries the power of the Church's prayer and blessing. Keep a small bottle on your nightstand. Many people report an immediate improvement in their sleep quality after incorporating holy water into their bedtime routine. You can obtain holy water from any Catholic church — simply bring a small bottle and ask, or use the holy water font near the entrance.
